- I am having trouble retrieving newsgroups with lots of entries. The Trumpet
- Newreader I am using truncates the list of articles and I can't seem to call
- up the remainder of the posts. Can this be fixed or should I look for a new
- newsreader? (BTW, I don't like the QVTNET newsreader, it is slow and has the
- same problem with large newsgroups). Any help would be appreciated. Cheers.

- I have not been able to use XDMCP, but I have heard other hint that
- they have. I usually use regular telnet to my X-windows host, and
- there I 'setenv DISPLAY <myhomeip>:0'. Then I can run my X-windows

- Subject: WinQVT/Net WinSock memory problems?
-
- Hi,
-
- I've finally managed to configure Windows for Workgroups 3.11
- to work alongside netware and WinQVT 3.96 (Trumpet WinSock)
- using the ODI protocol drivers.
-
- The only problem that I'm facing now is that once WinQVT gets
- started with WinSock, I am unable to start up any other
- application (eg. DOS boxes) despite having over 50meg worth
- of virtual free space.
-
- Besides that problem, I have no other complains, and am able
- to ftp files using WinQVT while copying files from Novell
- and Wfw servers simultaneously.
-
- I suspect it might be due to the net.cfg file used by ODI, as
- I've got no documentation (why is it so hard to get even
- scraps of information on networking ?!!) on the darn file.
-
- If anyone can shed any light on this, I'll most appreciative.
-
- Please reply by email as my news server expires alt.* articles
- very quickly.
-
- Thanks in advance!

- Subject: Dynamic IP allocation from SLIP server
-
- A friend of mine wanted to try out winsock, so he went down to the computing
- dept. to get a SLIP number. Problem is, the dept. no longer gives out actual
- IP addresses. Instead, you log on to the SLIP server and type your name and
- password. After that, the server hands you a temp. IP number from a pool of
- such numbers, sort of like rarp.
-
- He can't use winsock because it wants to know his IP in advance. Does anyone
- have any suggestions as to how he can get around this problem?
-

- Thanks,

- It's funny that you should mention this now. I just spent about 5 hours
- trying to get Trumpet winsock to work with Banyan using native packet
- drivers for an SMC card. If there is a way to do it I haven't found it.
- I ended up using NDIS, which really isn't to bad to install once you've
- done it. If anyone else has made it work, I'd love to hear how they did it.

- Subject: Winsock API Initialization Error
-
- I have experienced a problem the last several months that is causing me to
- pull my hair out!
-
- Environment:
-
- MS-DOS 6.2
- WFW 3.11
- Microsoft TCP/IP (1.0a) for WFW3.11
-
- 486DX50 - 16 MB RAM - Intel Etherexpress 16, Smartdrv 5.0
- Config.sys
- \dos\himem.sys
- \dos\emm386.exe
- files=50
- buffers=30
- ... other stuff ...
-
- Problem:
-
- Randomly, when trying to startup a Winsock application, I get the following
- error message:
-
- Large, full screen window opens with the heading "WI NSOCK API Dynamic Link
- Library" .
-
- A dialog box opens with the heading "Winsock API Initialization Error"
-
- The message in the dialog box is "There is not enough DOS memory to allocate
- DOS buffers for all sockets".
-
- The application then complains about no TCP driver present.
-
- Some times I will go almost all day without experiencing the problem.
-
- I tend to load a lof of small utility type applications at startup.
-
- I have tried adjusting the number of both Winsock sockets as well as net-bios
- sessions in the control panel - network - tcp/ip driver configuration.
-
- Some times, I will attempt to launch the Trumpet News Reader and experience
- the above problem. I will then close down the News Reader, startup a different
- Winsock Application successfully, and am then able to successfully launch the
- News Reader.
-
- I have tried running Memmaker, loading things high, loading things low, etc.,
- to no avail. I also experienced the same problem when I was running DOS 6.2 /
- Windows 3.1/ Lan Manager TCP/IP (2.2a).
-
- I would REALLY appreciate if anybody has any ideas on where to look for the
- problems.
-
- Thanks!

- Subject: Problem with WS-FTP on Vax
-
- I've been using WS-FTP (v. 94.02.08) for a week or so now, and am thrilled with
- it. However I am noticing a problem, or perhaps I should say annoyance, when
- FTPing from a Vax. The Vax (vms v. 5.5) directory lists account name and any
- subdirectory information in brackets before the filenames. eg:
-
- [tgn.stm-dir]das-15.stm;1
-
- When I try to FTP this file, it tries to create a file on my PC named [tgn.stm
- which it can't do because " [ " is not a valid Dos filename character.
- I can get around this by selecting the Prompt checkbox in WS-FTP and then
- renaming the incoming file to a valid Dos filename
-
- A bigger problem, however, is that, probably due to a similar limitation,
- WS-FTP is unable to change directories on the Vax. I am able to set my
- directory in the Connect dialog box of WS-FTP before I connect, but I then
- have to close my FTP session if I want to change directories again.
-
- Questions:
- 1. Should I stop complaining and be glad that WS-FTP supports Vax at all?
- 2. Has anyone figured out a way to get around this limitation?
- 3. If not, is a future version slated to work better with Vax?
-
- Thanks in advance for any input.
